I remember when I was a kid, I used to dislike sleeping. When the clock hits three, my grandma would start calling us for afternoon naps or “siestas” as my grandma would call it. I’d throw a really huge tantrum and she’d scare me with “no cartoons for you”. Of course, the little me would oblige. But it was such a challenge for me to do so. For me, afternoon naps meant I have to stow away my dolls or bid farewell to my playmates, and I just couldn’t deal with it. But now, as an adult, I wish to be in that exact situation and would happily take as many naps as I could. I know most of us could relate to this.
Sleep has now become a huge privilege to most of us. I mean, I’m so lucky if I could get at least three to four hours of sleep. And most of the time, it is caused by spending so much time looking on the screen. I’m pretty sure we’re all guilty on this.
It is so important to be able to have a good sleep. A lack of sleep makes me cranky and my skin just breaks out. It just makes me feel worst, couldn’t function properly and my body feels so heavy. When you’re well rested, you’d be able to think clearly, have a better vision of what you want to do for the entire day, and most especially your skin texture looks much better.
Basically, it’s good for your overall well-being.
Whatever your excuse or reason is, you still deserve a much better sleep. So, whether you only have a few hours to spare tonight or any nights, I’m sharing to you all the natural tips and tricks that I swear by that can ensure you’re down in a knick of time and on your way to dreamland.
Listen to Mellow Music
This is something I’ve been doing a couple of nights now especially when it’s cold and you just want to snuggle with your pillow. Or when you just want to clear your thoughts. I have a wide range of favourite Spotify playlists that I just put on repeat/shuffle and at a really low volume when I hit the sack. From soft ballads, acoustics to a country, and (my all-time fave) jazz. I find it that I get to sleep better when listening to relaxing sounds. I actually learned this trick from my brother. Piano in the Background playlist is his poison and I enjoy that, too. I remember getting all the creeps one night because I thought the house was being hunted as I was hearing someone playing the piano. It was funny (well, not at that night).

Write Down Your Thoughts
or basically just empty your mind. I always have my journal next to my bed or under my pillow. This is actually a good habit to grow into. If you’re having trouble forcing yourself to clear your mind, maybe dumping it in a piece of paper would do the trick.
Drink A Cup of Tea/Warm Milk
Basically, something my mom (or maybe other moms, too) or dad say when we’re having trouble sleeping. I like a warm milk before bed. It reminds me of my childhood days and it makes me feel all fuzzy on the inside in a good way.
A cup of tea is also a way to go. There are actually different types of tea for different cases. Like the ones I listed below:
- Peppermint (also great for digestions)
- Chamomile (aids in sleep, digestion and is loaded with antioxidants)
- Valerian (used to treat insomnia, anxiety, stress and sleep issues. Also has a positive effect on blood pressure.)
- Lavender (Improve mood, promote restful sleep, prevents infection, soothe bloating)
- Lemon Balm (aids to improve sleep, reduce anxiety, heal wounds)
- Kava Kava (helps with restlessness, sleeplessness and stress-related symptoms like muscle tension)
Don’t Get Yourself Full An Hour Before Going To Bed
I always tell this to my beau because he usually eats dinner pretty late and having a full stomach before bed is really bad. And maybe dangerous, too. I grew up hearing my grandma (and pretty much the older people in the family) say that this could lead to nightmares or not being able to wake up anymore the next day. So, this kinda stuck to me as I grew up. I know that there is some scientific explanation to this that includes gas or some body chemicals but I’m pretty lazy to look into it, so, I would just like to stick with this for a while.

Light some soothing candles/Burn some oils
but with caution (Or maybe I should’ve just said “Use an Oil Diffuser”). There is no right or wrong time to do this. I do this whenever I get the chance to because it is refreshing and just so calming. My favourite oil is the VITRUVIPeppermint Essential Oil. It smells soo good. It reminds me of the massage places, so, it’s just wonderful.
Save The Horror Flicks During The Day
I’m pretty sure you’ve heard your parents countless times when you were a child saying the same thing. And yes, even as an adult (or half-an-adult) now, this can be still applied. I know I’m not the only one that has a trouble sleeping after watching horror flicks. The images and some of the (scary) scenes just retain. And I later find myself praying deeply that nothing is under the bed, at the corner of the room or anywhere when the lights are turned off.
Basically, resulting in my brain (and my eyes) being all preoccupied and I’m awake the whole entire night.
Use Lavender Essential Oil
Lavender oil is the most versatile of all oils as it has so many uses, especially in relaxation. It’s been proven to help calm the mind and relax the body. This can be used in two ways – drop some in an oil diffuser or use it for your body. You can massage a drop of oil on your forehead, rub it on your wrist and palm, or smooth it all over your pillow.
Currently, I spritz some of my boyfriend’s perfume all over the bed and it knocks me down in no time. It makes me more comfortable and I really get a goodnight sleep. Makes me feel as if he’s just with me (and not hundreds of miles away).
Turn Off The Lights
As much as some of us get the creeps when we can’t see, this tip is a lifesaver when needed. Or if this is not a possibility, get yourself an eye sleeping mask which somewhat gives the same idea of this tip.
Stow Away Your Tech
Definitely the most crucial part of this post. This will easily break the whole process of getting a good sleep (even though you’ve done all that is mentioned above). I suggest you finish everything that you need to do that requires using your gadgets an hour or two before you sleep. Or put your phone away from you, far enough that you’ll feel lazy to get up and fetch it.
